New York, NY -- A leader of the NYC-based Laundry Workers Center (LWC) said he received a death threat Monday night, during a rally of over seventy people outside Liberato Restaurant, a popular Bronx establishment. LWC co-director Mahoma Lopez, along with members of the worker center and several community groups and labor unions, was protesting the firings of three workers last weekend at the restaurant.
"Someone came out of the restaurant and approached me at the picket line," Lopez said. "He told me to be careful because the company already has five hit men with guns."
Lopez has filed a police report for harassment. He speculated that the threat was intended to stop the
organizing efforts of the Laundry Workers Center and the workers at Liberato Restaurant.
Employees of the restaurant have reportedly been paid well below minimum wage, with no overtime pay and unsafe working conditions: no breaks, no
access to a first aid kit, dangerously steep staircases, poor ventilation, both freezing and extremely high temperatures, and being forced to work in a flooded basement. Workers also allege sexual
harassment from the restaurant’s owner Manuel Antonio Liberato, and a number of the restaurant’s managers.
In addition to the firings and alleged threat against Lopez, a worker involved with the Liberato campaign reported someone taking photos of her car and license plate, and LWC organizers say family members in the Dominican Republic and NYC have been threatened as well.
“Concerted activity”—workers acting together to improve their pay and working conditions—is protected by federal law. Liberato workers and the Laundry
Workers Center say the three firings targeted the leaders of the campaign and were retaliatory and illegal, as are the threats against LWC leaders.

Lopez said, "We're not going to give up. No matter what the company says, no matter what threats are made, we're not going to stop until they respect the
workers."
Mahoma Lopez is also the star of the award-winning documentary The Hand That Feeds, in which "the sandwich-maker... unites his undocumented
immigrant coworkers to fight abusive conditions at a popular New York restaurant chain."

Nueva York, NY -- Un líder del 'Centro de Trabajadores de
Lavanderias' Laundry Workers Center (LWC) dijo que recibió una amenaza de muerte el pasado lunes, durante una protesta con más de 70 personas, en frente del Restaurante Liberato, un local bien
conocido del Bronx. El co-director del LWC Mahoma Lopez, junto con miembros del centro de trabajadores, grupos comunitarios y sindicatos laborales, estaban protestando el despido de tres
trabajadores el fin de semana pasado.
"Alguien salió del restaurante y se me acerco dentro de la protesta,"
dijo Lopez. "Me dijo que me cuide porque la compañia ya tiene cinco cicarios con pistolas."
Lopez ha puesto una denuncia por hostigamiento. Especuló que la amenza
tenia la intención de parar la lucha del Laundry Workers Center y los trabajadores de Liberato.
Se ha reportado que a los empleados del restaurante se les paga mucho
menos quel sueldo mínimo, no se les paga horas extras, trabajan en condiciones inseguras: no tienen descanso, no tienen acceso a un botiquín, usan una escalera muy enpinada, tienen poca ventilación,
trabajan en ambos: temperaturas muy frías y muy calientes, y han sido forzados a trabajar en un sotano inundado. Los trabajadores también alegan hostigamiento sexual a manos del dueño Manuel Antonio
Liberato y varios managers.
Además de los despidos y la alegada amenaza hacia Lopez, una trabajadora
involucrada en la campaña de LIberato reportó que alguien estaba tomando fotos de su placa de auto y organizadores del LWC dicen que sus familiares en la República Dominicana y en NYC también han
sido amenazados.
"Actividad concertada" —trabajadores actuando juntos para mejorar su pago
y condiciones laborales--- esta protegia por ley federal. Los trabajadores de LIberato y del Laundry Workers Center dicen que los despidos tenian en la mira a los líderes de la campaña, fueron
en venganza y son ilegales, como lo son las amenazas en contra de los líderes del LWC.
La trabajadora de LIberato Maggie Andres, unas de las despedidas la
semana pasada, dijo "No pararemos las acciones, el dueño Manuel Antonio Liberato, ha continuado rompiendo la ley. Estamos levantando la voz para que se nos escuche, para que se respete la ley y
el restaurante comienze a pagar sueldo mínimo."
Lopez dijo. "No nos rendiremos. No importa lo que diga la compañia, no
importa las amenazas que se hagan, no vamos a parar hasta que respeten a los trabajadores."
Mahoma Lopez es también la estrella del galardonado documental The Hand
That Feeds, en el cual "el sanguchero...une a sus compañeros de trabajo, que son inmigrantes indocumentados, para luchar en contra de condiciones de abuso, en una popular franquisia de restaurantes
de Nueva York."
